Meeting & Event Venues

The sector at a glance

Meeting and event venues are the physical facilities where business and social gatherings actually happen — convention centers, conference centers, arenas and theaters, hotel ballrooms, exhibit halls, and private event spaces from historic mansions to ranch properties and warehouse lofts. The business is real estate plus service: a venue sells time in a room, then makes most of its margin on food and beverage, audiovisual, rigging, labor and parking. Buyers are meeting and event planners, association executives, corporate travel and procurement teams, trade show organizers, and couples and families — all of them shopping capacity charts, available dates, rental fee versus food-and-beverage minimum, load-in access and total cost rather than photographs alone. Austin anchors this cluster, and the market there is unusual right now: the Austin Convention Center is closed for a $1.6 billion demolition and rebuild that will grow rentable space from 365,000 to about 620,000 square feet, pushing citywide business to Palmer Events Center, hotel ballrooms and independent venues until the new building opens.
